{"id":342,"date":"2015-02-10T16:44:28","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T16:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transplantevidence.com\/blog\/?p=342"},"modified":"2015-02-10T16:44:28","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T16:44:28","slug":"sirolimus-use-and-cancer-incidence-in-us-kidney-transplant-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transplantevidence.com\/news\/2015\/02\/10\/sirolimus-use-and-cancer-incidence-in-us-kidney-transplant-recipients\/","title":{"rendered":"Sirolimus use and cancer incidence in US kidney transplant recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently we added to the Library as well as <a title=\"Sirolimus associated with less malignancy but an increased mortality after kidney transplantation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transplantevidence.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/sirolimus-associated-with-less-malignancy-but-an-increased-mortality-after-kidney-transplantation\/\">a blog<\/a> \u00a0a very good individual patient meta-analysis of the use of sirolimus showing that it was associated with a reduction in cancer incidence but also with an increased rate of death after kidney transplantation.\u00a0 Now we have<a title=\"AJT article\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/ajt.12969\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\"> a study of\u00a0data from the US transplant registry<\/a> concerning the use of sirolimus and the incidence of cancer. This is a large observational study but suggests that there is not strong evidence that sirolimus prevents cancer after transplantation, although it might be advantageous in patients with a high cancer risk. However an interesting observation was that there was an increased diagnosis of prostate cancer in patients receiving sirolimus.\u00a0 Overall the reduction in cancer incidence, after excluding prostate cancer, was 26%. Thus again this large registry data report does not provide convincing evidence for the use of sirolimus to prevent cancer.
