Gordon EJ, Feinglass J, et al.

Transplantation 2015 [record in progess].

Aims
To evaluate the efficacy of a bilingual, culturally targeted website for Hispanic patients and their family/friends in increasing their knowledge about living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT)

Interventions
Participants were randomized to either view Infórmate before attending their scheduled education sessions (website group) or attend their scheduled education sessions only (control group).

Participants
282 Hispanic/Latino kidney transplant candidates and/or family members/friends aged ≥ 18 years who had never received an organ transplant or formal education about transplantation.

Outcomes
The primary outcome measured was knowledge score.

Follow-up
3 weeks

CET Conclusions
This is a very carefully done study examining the efficacy of education directed at the Hispanic/Latino population in order to increase their knowledge of living kidney donation. People entering the trial were randomised to receive this additional internet information in their own language (Informate) or just standard educational practice in the two centres involved, namely North-western University in Chicago and the University of California at Davis. The participants were all pretested before exposure to the Informate programme, and again three weeks later. There was a significant improvement in the three week testing with respect to knowledge about living kidney donation in the educational arm (Informate) than in the control. This is quite an impressive result and whether it will lead to more living kidney donation in the Hispanic/Latino population, was beyond the brief of this study but will be an important aspect of future studies. Certainly in the short term knowledge was increased substantially and this, in general, should lead to a better living donation rate.
