Ban on use of HIV positive donors for HIV positive patients reversed

The HIV Organ Policy Equity Act (HOPE) passed the House of Representatives in the USA on November 12th and it is now ready to go to President Obama for his signature having been passed by the Senate a month or two ago. This will reverse the current legal ban in the USA which was enacted in 1988 which forbade the use of HIV positive organs for HIV positive recipients in need of a donor organ. It has been strongly supported by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) who needless to say are delighted that their efforts have had a positive outcome.
